My Summer Skincare Routine for Glowing Skin: What Actually Works
Honestly? I used to think skincare was way too complicated. Too many products, too many steps, too much confusing information everywhere. So for the longest time I just washed my face and hoped for the best.
Then last summer happened, and my skin was a complete mess. Oily by midday and dull-looking, and the sun was making everything worse. That's when I finally decided to actually figure out what my skin needs, and I'm so glad I did.
What I found is that a good summer skincare routine doesn't have to be complicated at all. In fact, the simpler, the better. Here's what genuinely worked for me and what I've been doing every day since.
First Things First: Cleansing
The biggest mistake I made before was using a harsh cleanser thinking it would control the oil. It did the opposite. When you strip your skin of its natural oils, it gets confused and produces even more oil to make up for it. So you end up oilier than before.
What actually helped was switching to a gentle, lightweight gel cleanser, something mild that cleans without leaving my face feeling tight. I wash my face twice a day, morning and night, with cool water, not hot. Hot water might feel nice, but it really does dry out your skin, especially in summer.
The right cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean and soft not squeaky or tight. If it feels tight after washing, it's too harsh.
Toner Changed Everything for Me
I ignored toner for years, thinking it was unnecessary. Turns out it's one of the most useful steps, especially in summer. A good toner removes whatever your cleanser missed — sunscreen residue, sweat, and pollution — and it also preps your skin to actually absorb your moisturiser properly.
I look for toners with niacinamide because it genuinely helps with oiliness and uneven skin tone over time. One trick I love in summer is keeping your toner in the fridge. Using a cold toner after cleansing is honestly so refreshing, and it helps with puffiness too.
Vitamin C in the Morning: Worth It
I was sceptical about serums for a long time — they seemed like an unnecessary extra step. But vitamin C serum in the morning is the one thing I'd never give up now. It helps protect your skin from sun damage throughout the day, and over time it genuinely makes your skin look brighter and more even.
You don't need an expensive one at all. A few drops on clean skin before your moisturiser is all it takes. Just make sure you always follow it with sunscreen because vitamin C can make your skin a little more sun-sensitive.
Light Moisturiser, Not Your Winter One
This is something I learned the hard way. My winter moisturiser was way too heavy for summer. It was sitting on top of my skin, mixing with sweat, and clogging my pores. In summer you need something lightweight — a gel moisturiser works beautifully because it absorbs quickly and doesn't feel greasy at all.
Look for hyaluronic acid or glycerin in the ingredients; both give your skin hydration without any heaviness. And if your skin is very oily in summer, your sunscreen (which usually has moisturising ingredients already) can sometimes do the job on its own.
Sunscreen. I Can't Say This Enough
If you do nothing else from this entire post, please wear sunscreen every single day. Not just at the beach. Every day, even when it's cloudy, even when you're mostly indoors. UV rays come through windows; they come through clouds. They're there even when you can't feel them.
Sunscreen is genuinely the best anti-ageing, anti-dark spots, anti-everything product that exists. Nothing else comes close. SPF 30 minimum every morning, and if you're spending time outside, reapply every couple of hours.
I know reapplying feels annoying but your skin ten years from now will genuinely thank you for it. It's the one habit worth building above everything else.
Evenings Are Simple
My night routine is much simpler than my morning one. After a full day with sunscreen and possibly makeup, I do a double cleanse — first with micellar water to remove everything on the surface, then with my regular gentle cleanser to actually clean the skin underneath. It sounds like a lot, but it takes two minutes.
After that, toner, a slightly richer moisturiser than the daytime one, and that's it. If I'm using retinol or any active treatment, nighttime is the only time for it — never in the morning during summer because it makes your skin sensitive to sunlight.
One Weekly Habit That Makes a Difference
Once or twice a week I exfoliate. Not every day – over-exfoliating in summer when your skin is already dealing with heat and sun is a recipe for irritation. But doing it once or twice a week removes the dead skin buildup that makes your face look dull and rough. After a few weeks of doing this consistently, the difference in how smooth and bright my skin looks is genuinely noticeable.
The Stuff That Isn't a Product
Honestly some of the biggest improvements I saw in my skin had nothing to do with products. Drinking more water — properly more, not just a glass here and there — made a visible difference within weeks. Eating more fruits and vegetables with high water content like watermelon and cucumber helped too. Getting enough sleep sounds obvious, but it's true; your skin repairs itself at night.
Shorter, cooler showers in summer also help a lot. And change your pillowcase more often than you probably do right now — bacteria on pillowcases cause way more breakouts than most people realise.
Where to Start If This Feels Overwhelming
Don't try to do everything at once. Start with just three things: a gentle cleanser, a lightweight moisturiser, and sunscreen. Do that consistently for two weeks. You'll already see a difference. Then slowly add in the toner, the vitamin C, and the exfoliation. Building habits gradually is so much more sustainable than trying to overhaul everything in one day.
Your skin is different from mine and from everyone else's, so some trial and error is normal. But the basics – cleanse, hydrate, protect – those work for everyone.
I really hope this helps. Summer skin doesn't have to be a struggle once you understand what it actually needs. Give it a few weeks of consistency and you'll be amazed at the difference. 🌸
